The Mediating Effects of Self-esteem on the Relationship between Anxiety and Aggression: in Adolescents in Welfare Institutions

|
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between Anxiety and Aggression amongst adolescents in welfare institutions. The subjects comprised 140 middle and high school students selected for the “2013 psychological intervention project of child treatment and rehabilitation of child welfare institutions”. They were assessed by means of the Revised Children``s Manifest Anxiety Scale(RCMAS), the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory(BDHI), and the Self-Esteem Scale(SES). For the purposes of data analysis, multiple regression analysis was performed in order to verify the mediating effects of self-esteem in the relationship between anxiety and the total score of aggression for the adolescents in welfare institutions and for each of the sub factors identified. In addition, in order to verify the mediating effects, the Sobel test was used to verify the statistical significance of the mediating effects. The results revealed that the partial mediating effect of self-esteem was indeed significant when anxiety affects the total score of aggression and the sub-factors of aggression, such as negativity, irritability, and hostility. Moreover, it indicated that the perfect mediating effects of self-esteem were significant when anxiety affects the sub-factors of aggression such as indirect aggression. This study confirmed that dealing with internal variables such as anxiety and self-esteem can be a very useful means of therapeutic intervention with adolescents in facilities who exhibit aggression during counseling and psychotherapy sessions.
